Beanworld Omnibus v1 (#1-21) coming

Just announced from Dark Horse, the original 21 issue run of TALES OF THE BEANWORLD will be collected into a single 608-page softcover volume in June 2018 as BEANWORLD OMNIBUS VOLUME 1. These are the stories previously collected in hardcover as WAHOOLAZUMA and A GIFT COMES, and a bargain a $25, compared to $40 for the hardcovers.

More details from Dark Horse here, including the curious decision to classify the genre as “Horror, Fantasy”. I guess that invasion that led to the Bone Zone is pretty horrific.

Beanworld Book 4 update

Just to update the previous post, BEANWORLD VOL 4 : HOKA HOKA BURB’L BURB’L is now scheduled to come out in July, 2017.
The most peculiar comic book experience returns in an all-new volume–Beanworld Volume 4: Hoka Hoka Burb’l Burb’l! The Boom’r Band coaxes a new healing power out of Chow, leading to a visit from Dreamishness’s relatives–the Windy Songsterinos–who bring their gift of rain. The storm causes great changes to Mr. Spook, Beanish and the Pod’l’pool Cuties. Marder’s deceptively simple artwork illustrates a self-contained ecological fantasy realm with its own unique rules and lingo. Beanworld has delighted readers from grade school to grad school for more than a generation, earning a spot on the New York Times Graphic Books Best Sellers List.

New and Upcoming Beanworld, print and cyberspace

First, sorry for the long gap in posting.

To catch up on the big news, the colour Beanworld hardcover TALES OF THE BEANWORLD is scheduled to come out in July, featuring the Asylum stories, a few other rarities and some new stuff.

And BEANWORLD BOOK 1: WAHOOLAZUMA is now available digitally from Dark Horse. You can check out a preview of the first 25 pages and then buy the whole 275 page book for $12.99 if that’s your thing. Presumably the next two books will follow in short order.

BEANWORLD 3.5 colour volume announced

Larry Marder has just announced the upcoming as-yet-unscheduled TALES OF THE BEANWORLD collection of various colour Beanworld pieces, along with some new material, which will lead directly into Book 4, hence the unofficial “3.5” label. Couple of clues in the image links in the post.

New and Upcoming Marder

FRACTURED FABLES, an anthology comic published by Image and including a non-Beanworld Larry Marder story, is now available.

And it’s just been announced that Larry Marder is going to be the editor of this year’s issue of LIBERTY COMICS, a benefit book for the CBLDF, and it will include a story called “Why We Fight”, featuring some of the Beanworld characters (but out of Beanworld continuity).

Marder at TCAF

Spent the day at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF), which included Larry Marder as a guest. For the sketch exchange, I brought in my interpretation of Mr. Teach’m, with a maple twist. Here’s Larry Marder with my sketch and the one I got in exchange. Saw a lot of other neat sketches that he got from others, they’ll show up here in time, I’m sure.

And since I was bored earlier, here’s a coloured version of my sketch that I did the other day.

I also supplied Larry with some genuine Canadian grown lima beans to transform into genuine Beanworld Action Figures. In exchange, I got a full set of the 8 figures, including the coveted “Battle Damage” variant. Here they are with some vintage cloisonne pins.

Great time was had overall, with a lot of great artists available for signing, sketching and selling their books. Larry and the rest will be there all day tomorrow, drop by if you can.

Remember (almost) Here

Apparently BEANWORLD BOOK 3: REMEMBER HERE WHEN YOU ARE THERE appears on the invoices for some, but not all, comic shops getting books from Diamond this week (which probably means only one of their warehouses got it before the cut-off for pulling this weeks books). So there’s a chance you’ll be able to get it on November 25, 2009, but double check before making a special trip. Otherwise, it should be everywhere else in the direct market next week, and could show up from other booksellers at any time (it’s showing up as In Stock on Amazon as of Nov. 29).

Update, there have been a few confirmed sightings. While the rest of us are waiting, here are some preview pages and a few words from long-time Beanworld fan Scott McCloud. Oh, and I think he did a few comics himself, in addition to his Beanworld fannishness…

A Gift Comes!

Big Beanworld week, as BEANWORLD BOOK 2: A GIFT COMES should be reaching comic book stores, with the balance of the original 21 issues reprinted, some for the first time ever, and starting the countdown to REMEMBER HERE WHEN YOU ARE THERE.

And for those going to the San Diego Comic Con, here’s a selection of some stuff you can see and buy at Larry Marder’s table.

Oh, and I think MYSPACE DARK HORSE PRESENTS v3 will have the first print publication of this story, but I’m not 100% certain.

New Beanworld – Dark Horse FCBD 2009

As mentioned a few days back, one of Dark Horse’s offerings for Free Comic Book Day 2009 was a sampler with four stories. One side is some Star Wars thing, and if you flip it over, you get some Beans, with Beanworld characters all over the cover (along with Usagi Yojimbo, Indiana Jones and Emily the Strange). A few more Beans decorate the table of contents, and then there’s a 2-page primer on the Beanworld, introducing the main characters and quickly running through the basics of a Chow Raid.

Nothing much new for the old hands at the Beanworld concept, but hopefully it’ll be enough to spur on the curiosity of a few of the people who see it and haven’t heard of the book before.
